Legacy NYC Parties

Unfortunately I missed last months amazing Legacy party thrown by the NYC Jungle crew. From what I gathered from the live mixes, it was a fucking amazing time. Check out these mixes from the original Odi himself, and Profile.

Happycore

Happycore Vol 3

I will admit it. As a teenager I listened to happycore, and to be honest I enjoyed it. I danced my ass off till 9am on many occasions. For those of you who may not have heard of this genre here is a great definition curtsey of Wikipedia.org Happycore can be defined as:

Happycore is a form of dance music typified by a very fast tempo (usually around 165-180 BPM), often coupled with male or female vocals, and saccharine lyrics. Its characteristically 4/4 beat “happy” sound distinguishes it from most other forms of breakbeat hardcore, which tend to be “darker”. In its original incarnation, it was often characterized by piano riffs, synth stabs and spacey effects. This genre of music is closely related to the typically Dutch genre of Gabber. Happy hardcore evolved from rave music around 1991–1993, as the original house music-based rave became faster and began to include breakbeats, evolving into breakbeat hardcore.

Basically its God’s gift to teenage ravers, but it does have an addicting sound to it.

Rave On - 1994 NYC

Pretty accurate depiction of the NYC rave scene in the mid-90’s. Some big names show up in this when they were still pretty young; Scotto, DB, and Adam X

From the director:

Nominated for Best Short Film at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, “Rave On” gives an inside look at the New York City rave underground of the mid-1990s. The first HD-originated film ever nominated at Sundance.

Thanks BreakfastScienceBoard for the find.

The Last Fly Life Ever. Seriously.

Tricia Romano, the Fly Life writer for the Village Voice is hanging up her hat on her job as staff writer for NYC nightlife. She has some interesting things to say about the DnB scene. She like me, grew up in the DNB scene, saw its brief rise, and then its collapse. I will always still love the music.

If you grew up with DnB or have read Fly Life check this out.
